Peony Blossom Case - Small

Description

A Hybrid Vision Encapsulated in Traditional White Porcelain Cases. In contemporary society boundaries among systematic classifications and firmly established spheres have long been blurred. The deconstruction of genres, especially through hybrid tendencies, has influenced the new force of craft art today. Craft is lafgely classified into ceramics, wooden craft, fiber craft, and metal craft, according with materials rather style, properties, or techniques. Kim Eun Joo's work reminds us of such classification. Kim's work presents beauty in hybridity, eclectically embracing traditional elements of each craft genre, from a modern perspective.

Product Description

Kim's large and small white porcelain cases, made using a slabbing technique, create luxury and coarseness in a mixture of elements from traditional furniture, metal ornamentation, and ceramics. Any by examining her work's properties one by one, we find for example weighty rectangles changing diversely in proportion with the shape of a lid. Her porcelain pieces provoke tender, warmhearted atmospheres, and seem to transform traditional wooden furniture, there in a work' s long stretched out foot; in a work's foot resembling a small table leg. Gyeongcheop, or decorative metal hinge used for making traditional furniture solid, (or simplified lock) also decorates her work, and distinguishes front from back. Kim's work embraces elements of typical traditional Korean craft, such as rectangular proportion, metal materials, and wooden furniture, with a contemporary attitude and feel.
